Intermediate Certificate: Childhood Studies

This course is for you if you already have some experience of working with children and young people and/or have a certificated academic qualifications at SCQF level 4 or above. This SCQF Level 5 course combines theory and hypothetical practical experiences for working with children and young people, allowing you to develop an awareness and understanding of all aspects of children’s growth, development and the importance of play, well-being and families. You will participate in a number of hypothetical practical experiences and online learning opportunities to develop your skills and understanding for working with children and young people. As part of your studies you will explore mental health and well-being that will develop your resilience and support your knowledge of this contemporary subject.

Who is this course for?

This course is for those who already have some experience of working with children and or certificated academic qualifications at SCQF level 4 or above. It will allow you to continue to develop your knowledge and understanding and progress onto a Level 6 course which will have a placement element.

What will I study?

This course allows you will develop and prepare the skills required for work within the childcare industry, gaining an understanding of the key issues involved in working with children and young people.


This will include understanding the individual child’s needs as they grow and develop into young people, how to provide and encourage holistic child development, support education and the value of play experiences.
