National 5: Mathematics SCQF Level 5

This course aims to provide successful performance in the SQA National 5 Maths exam. It aims to build upon and extend your existing knowledge of mathematics. Please note: National 5 Maths is a fast paced and very challenging course, and should only be undertaken by applicants who are already secure in their understanding of elementary aspects of algebra and trigonometry. If you are not secure in these aspects, we strongly advise that you complete National 4 Maths first, as it provides a solid foundation for tackling National 5.

  • One year (August-June)
  • Part-time evenings – six hours per week (three hours class time plus minimum three hours self-study)
    • Mondays 6-9pm at Kirkcaldy Campus
    • Tuesdays 6-9pm at Dunfermline Campus

OR

  • Distance Learning – eight hours per week self-study with tutor support (August-June)

What skills will I learn?

  • Mathematical Skills commensurate to SCQF Level 5.

What will I study?

  • This course covers a wide-range of topics including algebra, trigonometry, statistics, quadratics equations, vectors, surds, and indices. The final exam usually takes place in May and draws on questions taken from the entire curriculum of the course
  • Paper One is non-calculator and lasts for 1 hour and 15mins
  • Paper Two allows the use of a calculator and lasts for 1 hour and 50mins

 

Application Information

What further study options are available?

  • There is an external SQA examination at the end of the course, which determines whether you have passed, and the grade achieved
  • Please note that all learners need to achieve a satisfactory mark in the prelim in order to be presented for the SQA exam
