Advanced Certificate: SWAP Access to Nursing

This course gives you an introduction to health and social care professions and the career paths available in these areas. It allows you to begin your studies at level 6 studying subjects such as care and psychology. Successful completion of this course can lead you to a place on an HNC, HND, or degree course at college or university in the SWAP – East network. Who is this course for?

This course is for those who wish to advance to a Nursing Degree the following academic year. Accordingly, applicants should be confident that they have the time, support, and resilience, to attend college 2-3 days a week, carry out weekly self study, and submit work for continuous assessment throughout the year.
You must be SWAP eligible - visit the SWAP website to find out more about eligibility criteria
  • Entry is by informal discussion where you will be asked to demonstrate that you have the relevant life skills to successfully complete the SWAP course
  • Evidence of life skills may include level of maturity and experience of skills related to the potential choice of degree subject, including paid employment or volunteering and awareness of subject choice
  • Completion of written exercise
  • Please note that school leavers cannot apply for SWAP courses.

What skills will I learn?

  • This course gives you an introduction to health and social care professions and the career paths available in these areas.
  • It allows you to begin your studies at level 6 studying subjects such as care and psychology.

What will I study?

You will study a range of health and social care units covering topics such as:
  • values and principles
  • human development
  • investigate health and social care services
  • your professional code of conduct

You will also study topics such as numeracy and ICT to ensure you gain critical life skills, including communications to develop your literacy skills.

Lessons will be a blend of face to face classes with some online delivery. Work in class will be a combination of group tasks, self research and taught delivery.
Assessments will be over the course of the semesters using a variety of methods such as project based work and essays, there is no end of course exams.

Application Information

What further study options are available?

  • You can progress to HNC courses following completion of the SWAP programme. However, the main route for progression would be on to SWAP nursing degrees at Universities who offer the SWAP access route.
  • These routes include access to adult and mental health nursing, along with some offering children's nursing and paramedic science.

What career opportunities are there?

  • Nursing and other allied health professions.
