Shell Energy Transition Skills Hub

In partnership with Shell UK, Fife College has established the Energy Transition Skills Hub at our Rosyth Campus, designed to support Scotland’s transition to a renewable energy future. Funded by Shell UK, the Skills Hub offers innovative training and resources to equip students and local communities with the skills needed for the rapidly growing green energy sector.

Preparing Scotland for a Renewable Future

The Energy Transition Skills Hub contributes directly to Scotland’s Climate Emergency Skills Action Plan, which anticipates the creation of 50,000 green jobs by 2030. Through hands-on, immersive learning, the Hub provides opportunities for students to develop practical knowledge in renewable energy technologies, including SmartGrids, wind energy, and solar PV systems.

Central to the Hub is the NanoGrid Learning Environment (NGLE)—a small-scale, mobile grid system designed to simulate real-world scenarios in grid design, management, and maintenance. The NanoGrid will initially focus on renewable technologies and will be expanded over the next three years to include advanced features such as hydrogen energy storage, electric vehicle charging points, and smart home integrations.

Addressing the Skills Gap

Scotland’s renewable energy sector represents an exciting opportunity for career development and community sustainability. The Hub aims to raise awareness of these opportunities while addressing the critical skills gap in Scotland’s green economy. By fostering a well-trained workforce, the Energy Transition Skills Hub contributes to national net zero ambitions.

This project builds on Shell UK’s long-standing commitment to energy skills development. Shell aims to support 15,000 individuals into jobs focused on the energy transition by 2035. Through collaboration with Fife College, Shell continues to invest in the future of energy by supporting educational initiatives that connect individuals with the skills required for a sustainable energy landscape.

Looking Ahead

The Energy Transition Skills Hub is one of three such facilities in the UK, with others located in Aberdeen and Pembrokeshire. Together, they form part of Shell UK’s efforts to ensure the energy transition benefits everyone.

As Fife College continues its mission to provide high-quality, future-ready education, the Skills Hub represents a significant step forward in helping Scotland achieve its green economy goals.
