Fife College has been announced as a finalist in three categories at this year’s College Development Network (CDN) Awards.

In the Digital Learning Award category, the College’s Innovative Healthcare Pathways: Transforming Digital Learning project has been shortlisted. Developed in partnership with NHS and Skills Development Scotland, the College has created a pioneering Healthcare Pathways course that immerses students in various healthcare roles using 360-degree footage and digital learning.

This programme, which broadens career perspectives by showcasing diverse NHS opportunities beyond traditional roles, has also recently been shortlisted in the Technology: Transforming Learning, Teaching, and the Curriculum category at the Learning Places Scotland Awards.

Student Sumi Bhandari, who overcame significant challenges after moving from Nepal to Scotland while eight months pregnant and without knowing English, is also up for the Student of the Year award.

Beauty student Sumi has been recognised for her efforts in fostering community connections and encouraging others to gain new skills and confidence. Through various volunteering roles, Sumi has become a source of inspiration and empowerment for other women, especially those facing similar challenges or domestic abuse.

The College completes a hat-trick of nominations in the Skills Development Award category where work in response to the demand for counselling and mental health support in the region has been recognised. This work has included the establishment of a campus-based counselling service and The Counselling Network which aims to provide practical experience and foster industry connections.

These initiatives have enhanced students' skills, confidence, and professional recognition, with plans to expand the new approaches into the community and potentially influence counselling education nationally.

Fife College Principal Jim Metcalfe said:

“We are thrilled that Fife College has been named a finalist in three categories at this year’s CDN Awards. These nominations are a wonderful recognition of the passion and hard work of our staff, students, and partners.

“Being shortlisted for the Digital Learning Award shows how we are embracing technology to give our students the best start in their healthcare careers. We are also incredibly proud of Sumi Bhandari for her Student of the Year nomination, her journey and dedication to helping others is truly inspiring. Our recognition in the Skills Development Award for work in the important area of counselling and mental health support is another proud moment for us.

“Fife College is committed to making a real difference in our students’ lives and the wider community and these nominations are a real testament to that commitment.”
