My story
In 1997 I was looking for change in career. I decided on the Certificate in Counselling, Theory and Practice as I was interested in it and wanted to build on my existing skills. I hadn’t engaged in studying since I left school and really enjoyed learning something new - my fellow students were great and the lecturers were excellent.
Studying this course made a significant difference to me personally. We studied various theories and therapies and also looked at our own personal development. I think this changed my outlook on life significantly.
After completing the course, I volunteered for Cruse Bereavement for many years. I didn’t continue counselling as changes in my life opened up other opportunities.
I had a business in the clothing and fashion industry for 30 years which was challenging and exciting. I was also a Fife Councillor for 25 years which was interesting and have served on several Boards including Fife College where I am Depute Chair. Understanding counselling has been very helpful in all of these roles and I’m very pleased I did the course.
My advice to any new student is first make sure you pick a subject you enjoy. Education will not guarantee success but qualifications will give you the opportunity to compete and with persistence you can succeed.
