My name is Kieran McLoughlin, and I am a lecturer in Performing Arts at Fife College. I have been working at the College for 16 years this month. Before I came to the College, I was working as a theatre director. I ran my own theatre company for several years.
Between myself and graduates from my course, we have made our own theatre company in Edinburgh. I ran this for 10 years where we toured shows nationally and across Europe. I bring that industry-level experience into the department from being a theatre director. Communicating with actors to work with a theatre director or a film director.
A lot of my training that I did was within European theatre. There is a wide range of practitioners that I can bring into the workshop to work with students. A lot of my work is quite physical. Those are influences I tend to use in the workshops with the students. Students that come to our faculty can expect to have industry-level training, working in theatre and film in an engaging department with real-life projects and collaborating with companies.
What they can also expect is to work hard because we train you really hard and we take our training seriously, but we have fun while we are doing it.
At the moment, we are just working on a production with the HNCs. It is just about to go to production next week, and that is a lot of their hard work and their ideas going into the final throes of having a production. The best thing about working at Fife College has to be the staff and the students; working with them; working in a creative and supportive team; and also working with the students who bring a lot of fun and laughter to the workshops. They really challenge themselves and they work hard. Also, the facilities are another great part of Fife College.
We have our theatre in Kirkcaldy, and we've got a new theatre that's been coming with the new campus as of next year. We also get to work within the film department and radio as well with certain projects, and we really invest that time to make sure that the students get the industry-level training.
